Scouts Wales – Democracy Challenge Badge

On Thursday 13 March and Friday 14 March 2014, Beaver and Cub Scouts in Abergele and Llanfairpwll, North Wales received workshops from the Outreach team as part of their Democracy Challenge.

All Beaver and Cub Scouts got the opportunity to learn about the National Assembly for Wales and the importance of voting. They learnt who their local Assembly Members are, what the Assembly are responsible for in Wales and when and where Assembly Members meet to discuss and debate different areas of responsibility.

The workshop culminated with a voting exercise where the Scouts had to vote for which area of responsibility they think is the most important with this being followed by a discussion on how the Assembly ensure that things such as Education and the Environment in Wales are cared for.

Deborah Tanner, Development & Planning Officer for Snowdonia & Anglesey Scout Area and Denbighshire District said,

“It has been great to have Caryl, the North Wales Outreach Officer, coming along to these sessions and working with the new Beaver section in Llanfairpwll and the Cub section in Abergele to begin their democracy challenge badge.

Caryl and the material she uses, shows how a subject that is really important but that could be a little dry can be presented in a way that engages young people.  This captures their interest and helps encourage active participation in our democratic process at an early age and will hopefully plant the seeds for them to fully participate as adults too.

The leaders can now go on to use the additional activities she has provided with the young people to gain their democracy challenge badge”
